Overview
The five disciplines Peter Senge set out in 1990 are exactly the capabilities AI cannot replicate. For thirty-five years, what was missing was a practical way for teams to build them.
The Fifth Discipline inspired a generation of leaders and frustrated most of them: the ideas were right, but putting them to work proved elusive. Read again in 2026, Senge's disciplines (systems thinking, personal mastery, mental models, shared vision and team learning) describe what AI cannot do. AI optimises towards the objectives it is given. It cannot decide which objectives matter, imagine what does not yet exist, or take part in a team's collective judgement.
The tools Senge pointed to, such as causal loop diagrams and computer simulations, stayed abstract and dependent on experts. The article argues that a practical method now exists, combining three established approaches: LEGO® Serious Play® to make invisible system forces tangible, Senge's framework to give that work direction, and Dialogue in the tradition of David Bohm to turn insight into changed behaviour. Together they form The Systems Synergy.
Its warning to leaders: organisations that invest heavily in AI while neglecting these human capabilities will find AI optimising very efficiently towards the wrong goals.
